Penelope

Last April, Chain of Hope received a call from a woman who had fallen on hard times. She was very ill and was facing open heart surgery, which would be followed by another major surgery. She had a Boxer named Roxie that was about 7 yrs. old. She was crying and said that she couldn’t take care of Roxie anymore and could we help her? Judy, Karen and Debbie headed over. Roxie’s owner was in pretty bad shape, very frail. Roxie was very skinny. It looked like both of them had been falling through the cracks. She signed Roxie over to Chain of Hope and we assured her that we would find Roxie a wonderful home.

We got Roxie back to Chain of Hope and we all loved her immediately! She had some teeth missing and her tongue hung out the side of her mouth all the time. It was very endearing.  She was very, very thin. We got her de-wormed and heart worm tested. She was negative, thank goodness. She was not spayed yet. In fact, she was in heat when we picked her up. She needed some TLC and some good food and she’d do fine.

Sarah and Nate offered to foster Roxie! They took her home, changed her name to Penelope and helped her settle in. They adored her and said she was an easy dog!

It wasn’t long before someone was very interested in Penelope. His name was Travis and his sister works at Three Dog Bakery, which is how he found out about Penelope. Travis filled out an application and was approved to adopt Penelope. She was spayed and a few days later, Penelope went home with him to start her new life!

Travis and Penelope are pretty inseparable when he’s home-she follows him everywhere! Penelope has put on some weight and looks fabulous. Her tongue still hangs out and it always will, but Travis thinks it’s pretty cute and so do we. Penelope is home for the rest of her life. We wish her former mom well with all of her health issues and we thank her for loving Penelope enough to let her go to a better place.
